Resource Conservation
To facilitate more efficient recycling for our partners and guests, McCormick Place established the following operational initiatives:
- Separate waste containers for paper, bottles, cans and general waste are provided in public spaces.
- One trash compactor at each building location is now designated to hold recyclable co-mingled waste.
- Our waste disposal partner now sorts waste and recyclables separately to determine more accurate facility diversion rates.
- By working with trash disposal contractors, a project that will improve the ability to separate construction-related waste generated from exhibit halls events is under development.
In an effort to better reduce, reuse and recycle food service waste generated by visitors to the facility, our exclusive food service partner, Chicago Restaurant Partners has implemented the following initiatives:
- Styrofoam or polystyrene plastic products will not be used for serving in catering and concessions operations.
- Biodegradable flatware, straws, serving dishes, and cups are now used in the food courts.
- To lower our reliance on non-renewable, pollution-producing fossil fuels, McCormick Place purchases 10% of annual electricity needs from renewable sources. For shows which wish to purchase a higher percentage, we facilitate the purchase of additional renewable energy certificates for the difference in cost between non-renewable and renewable electricity.
In an effort to use fewer natural resources to service our events, McCormick Place provides:
- 100% recycled paper products in facility restrooms.
- Water stations in public areas to limit the use of bottled water.
